SAFIA BAGAM
The unfortunate resident
of Karachi, 10 years old, Safia Bagam lost her both legs
in the exploitation of one of the dark days of Pakistan,
on October 8, 2005, when she with her parents and two brothers
came to see her grand parents at Balakot (Mansehra). This
little creature was sleeping at home when the devastating
shake of the earth made the big wall fall on her and her
younger brother, taking his life, and leaving her crying
and paralyzed for the rest of her life. After a week on
October 16, 2005, life-saving teams at work took her to
the Shifa Foundation in a miserable Condition, where the
diagnosis defined the fractures and severe amputation in
her both legs above knees. Unfortunately the left leg was
badly affected, infact already broken, and doctors had no
other option to cut it off from the body. The poor child
had to loose her left leg. The countless rounds of surgeries
made right leg lucky. The artificial left leg and calipers
made little Safia walk again though not normal as ever yet
new normal. It all had been possible with the Grace of Almighty
and hard work of Shifa Foundation which made her walk and
smile again. Safia is still attending her physiotherapy
classes every month and is very happy and enthusiastic for
going school again. |

RASHID MALIK
May 18, 2006 was unlucky
day for Mr. Rashid Malik. This young man, hanging to life
by the threads was brought to Shifa Foundation in a pitiful
and pathetic condition, complaining of violent pains in
abdomen and diarrhea accompanied by a fever of 103-4 0F.
He had this fever for last one month. Doctors were successful
to diagnose the symptoms of Typhoid which was active in
the patient’s system for last four weeks and had resulted
in perforation of the last part of intestine. This is a
complication that rarely occurs in typhoid and is usually
fatal unless operated. At the spur of the moment, the doctors
brought an end to the evil pain by doing Laprotomy surgery.
With the Grace of Almighty, the patient felt better and
ultimately strong enough after the operation. So that he
was discharged on May 29, 2006 in good health with these
comments about Shifa Foundation: |

WAQAS
Mr. Amin Ullah, brother of patient Mr. Waqas (MR. # 84-39-88)
is very much delighted that the leg of his brother is saved
by the tremendous efforts of SIH Consultants on the Faculty
of SCM.
Mr. Waqas met an accident
while sitting on shoulder of road near his house and was
hit by a car. The compassionate car driver took waqas for
first aid immediately into local hospital. After examining
the physician found fractures of both legs below the knees.
This happened on March 27, 2006. A surgeon in a local hospital
in Taxila operated upon him and gave a very poor prognosis
and declared that there is no alternate except bilateral
amputations. Dissatisfied Amin Ullah brought his brother
Waqas to Shifa Foundation on April 1, 2006. Since then the
Shifa Foundation surgeons have been diligently working and
have operated several times and Mr Amin Ullah is very happy
that his brother’s legs have been saved. (Alhamdullah)
we hope and pray that he walks soon. |

SAADIA RAZA
Among the vast number of people who cannot afford medical
treatment was Saadia Raza, who fell prey to a deadly tumor
in the rectum area and was brought to Shifa Community Health
Center Islamabad for treatment.
Saadia was given 91 percent relief by Shifa Foundation and
only 9 percent of the total cost was borne by her family.
"We
couldn't even think of getting our sister operation
in such a standardized hospital. The doctors are nice,
behavior is gentle, care is exceptional and
everything went smoothly".
Says Zeeshan - younger brother of Saadia |
What Saadia faced is not an exception by
any means. A growing number of the Pakistani populace has
no or very little access to healthcare, let alone quality
healthcare, mainly because of poverty. |
